"As Our Country Goes To War..."
As our country goes to war there are many emotions flowing strongly through our hearts and minds. Let us not forget that we have pledged to support our country, giving our lives if need be. We have taken upon ourselves vows which can never be forgotten. We have sworn to protect our Nation from threats, both foreign and domestic. At this hour in our nation’s history our country has been threatened. We have been challenged, and it is the duty of our Nation’s youth to rise to this challenge.
In wondering what this war will bring to our country I am reminded of something Thomas Wolfe once said, "Perhaps this is our strange and haunting paradox here in America -- that we are fixed and certain only when we are in movement." America has set its course. We have begun the war that we now fight, and in this journey we are certain we will prevail. This message resounds in my heart whenever I think of the millions of people who will be affected by this war. Our neighbors, friends, relatives and fellow Americans in the Armed Forces need our prayers. We can not, however, forget the people of Iraq in our prayers. They need our prayers as well. I would ask that each of us say a prayer for these men, women, and children.
It is my solemn hope that this war will end quickly, with as little harm to both sides as possible. Never forget the pledges we have assumed which echo in the hearts of millions of young men.
