  What Is DeMolay?

DeMolay of the Month

Adam Fowler - April 2003

state officer collar at Conclave.

Adam Fowler, a member of Samuel S. Lawrence Chapter in Marietta, was selected as the Georgia DeMolay Online "DeMolay of the Month" for April 2003. Adam has been an active member of Georgia DeMolay for a number of years, serving as a state officer for two years, and more recently, as the Squire Commander of the State Priory of Georgia. He has been a member of DeMolay since October 3, 1998, and in that time earned the Past Master Councilor's Meritorious Service Award. He is attending school at the State University of West Georgia. We sat down with Adam to learn a little more about him....

GDO: Adam, congratulations on your selection as GDO's April DeMolay of the Month. We want our web site visitors to learn a little more about you and your DeMolay career. How did you find out about and get involved with DeMolay?

Adam: Back in eighth grade Justin [Nobles] approached me about it. He started off the conversation with "do you believe in God?" which I thought was comical. I met some of the other guys at SSL such as Derek Brown, who made me feel like I belonged. I went to some events and joined at Beach Weekend.

GDO: What do you like best about DeMolay?

Adam: I can't place my finger on one thing. There is just so much that I enjoy about DeMolay. The wonderful friends you make, people you meet, traveling, memories, and those are just some of the things that make DeMolay so great to me.

GDO: Your term as Master Councilor of Samuel S. Lawrence Chapter two years ago was a real turning point in the history of the Chapter. The Chapter had been struggling before your term, and by the time your term was completed, SSL had become one of the more successful Chapters in the state. To what do you attribute your success, and what advice can you give new Master Councilors on how to change the momentum in their Chapters?

Adam: The success was based on the chapter's desire to become the best. It was a total group effort: Members, Advisors, Parents' Club, Sweetheart, Masons, and all chapter supporters made Samuel S. Lawrence Chapter what it has become. The chapter was aware that it was in a dire state and knew that it was a do or die situation for the chapter. It was the full effort by the chapter to make things happen. I'll try and summarize some of the things you can do, as Master Councilor, for the chapter. Communication is very important. You must talk to everyone and keep everyone informed. Be open minded to advice that people may offer you. Don't squander your resources. Don't try to do everything all by yourself. See that things get done, whether by you, through you, or for you. Take the initiative and make sure that things happen and get done. Know what's going on. It takes a great deal of time commitment for you to make something happen. Don't leave DeMolay at the Lodge [building], be innovative and creative. Be enthusiastic about the events you plan and DeMolay in general and make sure that other people are too. Make DeMolay something people want to do. Those are just some of the things you can do to make the chapter better.

GDO: You recently chaired a committee that implemented a unique state event fund raiser for your Chapter members. Tell us a little bit about the system and how members earn credits for the Chapter to pay their ways to state events.

Adam: It is in its infant stage currently. It is a reward based system that provides incentives for the membership to do more to benefit the chapter and themselves. You earn points for doing tasks for the chapter and get paid for, in part or full, to go to events that the chapter may decide to partake in. It is a wonderful system that can provide a great way to create more activity in the chapter.

GDO: What are your goals for your future in DeMolay?

Adam: One of my goals is furthering Knighthood. Keeping Samuel S. Lawrence Chapter one of the best chapters it can possibly be (no bias, of course). Seeing DeMolay, locally, statewide, and internationally, prosper. Most things I take day by day. It seems to be a better way of taking most tasks for me. Just plot a course and take events as they come and make the proper adjustments.

GDO: Outside of DeMolay, what are your other interests and activities?

Adam: College, work, playing sports when I can find time, hanging out with friends, just having fun, and being happy.

GDO: Thank you for your time, Adam, and congratulations again on your selection as GDO's DeMolay of the Month!

Adam: It is a pleasure and honor to be recognized as DeMolay of the Month for April. Thank you for this distinction. God Bless DeMolay, God Bless America, and God Bless you all.
