  What Is DeMolay?

DeMolay of the Month

Zach Ford - January 2008

Zach receives the Traveling Gavel.

Zach Ford, a member of Mountain Park Chapter in Stone Mountain, was selected as the Georgia DeMolay Online "DeMolay of the Month" for January 2008. He has been a member of DeMolay since December of 2005 and attends Parkview High School. We sat down with Zach to learn a little more about him....

GDO: Zach, congratulations on your selection as GDO's January DeMolay of the Month. We want our web site visitors to learn a little more about you and your DeMolay career. How did you find out about and get involved with DeMolay?

Zach: When my grandmother moved in, she brought all of my grandfather's masonic things, so I looked in on it.

GDO: Was there one item in your grandfather's Masonic things that was the sole point of interest on checking in to the Masonic family?

Zach: The main thing of my grandfather's that got me interested in Masonic things was his fez; I thought it looked interesting and wanted to know more about it.

GDO: What event hooked you into joining DeMolay?

Zach: Well, I was hooked in DeMolay after a lock-in at Mountain Park. Everyone there seemed cool, and they had some video games. It was a little weird at first since I didn't join through anyone I knew very well. It was like sleeping at a friend's house I had never met before. But as the night went on, I felt more at ease, and I eventually felt comfortable around all the guys.

Zach crowns the new Mountain Park Sweetheart.

GDO: What do you like best about DeMolay?

Zach: DeMolay gave me a lot of new experiences. In fact, my first DeMolay experience was also my first time ever driving a go cart.

GDO: What do you think has been your greatest benefit from joining DeMolay?

Zach: I met one of my very best friends through DeMolay.

GDO: What was the best DeMolay event you have ever attended?

Zach: The best DeMolay event I have ever attended was probably my first Conclave (Julius Moody's). It was on the beach and very laid back. I was rooming with friends I had gained through the chapter, and the entire event was a fun experience.

GDO: What is your favorite DeMolay memory?

Zach: When I was able to share this organization with some of my friends for the first time.

GDO: In detail, what have you found to be the best way to sell DeMolay to your friends?

Zach: The way I sold DeMolay to my friends was, with the help of Paul [Hunt], explaining that DeMolay is a place where you can have some fun experiences and meet some cool people. My friends were reluctant at first about joining but then my different groups of friends met. The DeMolay guys started to hang out a little with the non-DeMolay guys and they just kind of morphed to just DeMolay guys.

Zach is learning to play the guitar.

GDO: What are your goals for your future in DeMolay?

Zach: Right now, all I want to do with DeMolay is improve myself with the goals and virtues DeMolay has helped me attain.

GDO: Outside of DeMolay, what are some of your other interests and activities?

Zach: I'm currently trying to learn the guitar, but other than that, I'm just living my life.

GDO: Thank you for your time, Zach, and congratulations again on your selection as GDO's DeMolay of the Month!

Zach: Any time. It was fun reflecting on my DeMolay career.
